Childcare and school
In Denmark most children are enrolled in a day care program before they reach the age where they begin primary school. There is a large variety of day care programs. Some are public and are heavily subsidized by public funding and some are private with or without financial support from the municipalities. Here you can read more about the different types of private childcare.
In this booklet (pdf) you can read about the City of Copenhagen's wide range of day care offers for children between the age of naught and six. At the same time, you can read about how to register your child for a day care offer and find the registration form for admittance to an institution/day care offer.
You will have to contact your local municipality and ask for "Pladsanvisningen" in order to enroll your child in the public institution. Please note that there might be a waiting list to the daycare program and it is thus recommendable that you contact the administration at Pladsanvisningen as soon as possible.

Age O-3
Nurseries take in children from six months to three years of age. The staff is especially trained to look after the needs of your child and your child will be a part of a large group of children. If you prefer that your child is looked after in a private home with a small group of children you could choose a day care instead.
In the municipality of Copenhagen, there are two "vuggestuer" where children with parents employed at the University of Copenhagen have the right of priority. These institutions are:
Age 3-6
Kindergartens take in children from the age of two years and ten months until the day they start school.
School age
In Denmark all children are entitled to free education at a public school. It is compulsory for children to attend school from the age of 6. The first year is kindergarten class followed by nine years of schooling which may be supplemented by an optional grade 10.
You can choose between:
-
Enrolling your child in a public school
-
Enrolling your child in a private, international school
-
Teaching your child at home. The local municipality carries out supervision, if you choose to teach your child at home.
Following primary school, which is completed at the age of 16-17, nearly all Danish students continue on to some form of upper secondary education.

After school
You may also choose to enroll your child in an after-school centre. The after-school centre and same site after-school centre are professionally staffed childcare options for children attending kindergarten class and grade 1-3. An after-school centre is generally at a different location from the child's school, whereas a same site after-school centre is located on the same premises as the school.
You normally enroll your child at the after-school centre at the same time as you enroll him or her at the district school.
