Public Health Insurance

Denmark has a comprehensive public health service, including doctors, medical specialists, hospitals, health service, home care, health visitor services and pediatric dental care, and more. Most health insurance services and hospitalizations are free of charge. The Danish health service is based on the principle of equal access to the health services for all citizens.

The municipalities are responsible for: preventive health care programs for children, home nursing, health visitor services, pediatric dental care and in-school health services. The municipalities issue health cards and administer citizens' choice of doctor and health insurance scheme group. The five regions are responsible for operating the hospitals and psychiatric treatment in the regions.

CPR number & Health Card

When you have registered with the Civil Registration System you will receive a CPR number. The CPR number is used in connection with registration and personal identification. Once you have registered with the Civil Registration System, your health card is mailed to you. Now, you have access to health care services offered to all Danish citizens. Though everybody staying in Denmark is entitled to hospital assistance in case of accidents or sudden illness, you might want to make sure that you are covered sufficiently in the time period before receiving your Danish health card. If you desire travel insurance coverage, you must take out a policy before travelling to Denmark. Ask your current insurance company what your property, liability and accident insurance policies cover when you live and work in Denmark.

The health insurance card sent to you by your municipal authority is your proof that you are entitled to public health treatment. The card states your name, address, CPR number and the name and address of your general practitioner. The health card must be presented when you visit your doctor, hospital, municipal offices and many other places. It can also serve as id, when picture id is not required.

European Health Insurance Card

To facilitate access to health care for European citizens, the EU member states have issued a European Health Insurance Card. You can find information about the European Health Insurance Card at: http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=509&langId=en

If you are an EU citizen, you can order the blue EU health insurance card by contacting Borgerservice (citizen service) in your municipality. For Copenhagen, the number is 33 66 33 66. If you are a spouse of an EU citizen and you live in Copenhagen, you must contact "Sygesikringen - EU afdelingen" at tel 33 66 33 66 or go to Citizen Service at Nyropsgade 1 between 10 - 14. Here, you must ask for a case worker from "Sygesikringen - EU afdelingen". You must bring your passport and your marriage certificate. If you live outside of the municipality of Copenhagen, you must contact your local Borgerservice.

The blue European health card must be used for trips to another EU member state lasting more than one month. If you have to receive medical attention in a country that charges for health care, you will be reimbursed either immediately, or after you go home to your own country.

If the trip is shorter than one month, you can use either your yellow health card or the blue EU health card.

Private Health Insurance

It is possible to obtain a private health insurance policy to supplement the public health insurance.
