Transportation

Maps and route planners

On De Gule Sider you can look up addresses and find maps, route planners and route descriptions for walking, biking and driving.

The website Rejseplanen is a travel planner which offers suggestions to the easiest way to get from one place to another by using public transportation.

Public transportation

Public transportation is quite extensive and well functioning in Denmark. The public transportation system in the Copenhagen area is covered by a one ticket system valid for the Metro, S-train and busses.
For information about public transportation, timetables and fares, please go to Movia.

Biking

Biking is a common way of local transportation in Denmark. Many streets have tracks for biking. With a special ticket you are able to bring your bike along on a train ride.

Lost goods including bicycles which are not retrieved from the police station will be sold at public auctions. Hence, it is possible to buy used bikes at lower prices. Auctions are held every Saturdays at 8:30 AM at Slotsherrensvej 113, 2720 Vanløse. For more information about the date of the next auction, please go to Topauktioner. Conditions about auction sale can be found here.

For advice about safe biking, please go to Expat in Denmark

How to register your vehicle and get Danish license plates

If you take up residence in Denmark and bring a vehicle to Denmark the vehicle must be registered to Danish license plates within 14 days of arrival and you must pay registration tax. To register a motor vehicle in Denmark, you must first take out an aliability insurance. Contact an insurance company if you need further information.

Before the vehicle can be registered to Danish license plates, an ordinary technical inspection and a customs inspection must be performed by a vehicle inspection authority to determine the identity, the number of kilometres on the clock, features and general condition of the vehicle.

When the vehicle has passed the inspection, you must visit your nearest tax centre.

Please bring the following documents and items with you:

  • Vehicle inspection form and the customs inspection form issued by the vehicle inspection authority
  • Foreign registration certificate
  • Receipt, if any, for payment of customs duty (when bringing vehicles from non-EU countries)
  • Cash to pay the registration tax
  • Registration form (form no. 21.016). You can find it at Skat's website under Borger- Blanketter

SKAT will then calculate the registration tax based on the vehicle's market price including registration tax if sold to a person in Denmark. This price will be compared to the vehicle's original cost and loss in value.

When you have paid the registration tax the license plate desk at the tax centre will issue Danish license plates to you.

Please bring the following documents and items with you:

  • Vehicle inspection form and the customs inspection form issued by the vehicle inspection authority
  • Foreign registration certificate
  • Insurance certificate
  • Decision concerning valuation
  • Receipt for registration tax paid
  • Cash to pay for license plates

For more information please see Skat's own description.

Exchanging your driving license

It is not necessary to exchange a foreign driving license if it was obtained in an EU country or in Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. Driving licenses from other countries than those mentioned above must be exchanged for a Danish driving license within 90 days after a permanent residence is established in Denmark. At the local municipal citizen service centre, you can exchange your foreign driving license for a Danish driving license within six months after taking up residence in Denmark.

Please remember to bring the following with you:

  • National driving license
  • Doctor's certificate
  • A valid passport
  • A valid residence permit
  • Passport photo
  • Cash to pay for the exchange
  • A translation of your national driving license if the letters of the license do not originate from the Latin alphabet

Please be advised that your foreign driving license will not be returned to you. However, you may request that the Danish police send your foreign license to your home address abroad.

Furthermore, a driving test is mandatory before your license can be exchanged to a Danish license unless you are a citizen of the Australian Capitol Territory, Brasil, Japan, The Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine or Switzerland.
