Guided Tour at Mindelunden
Mindelunden is a World War II cemetery commemorating the resistance fighters who lost their lives during the occupation in the fight for a free Denmark. Mindelunden is located in the former military training grounds of the Engineer Barracks in Ryvangen, at the border between Hellerup and Outer Østerbro, Copenhagen.
In 1893, the Danish state acquired Vognmandsmarken and Ryvangen for military use, later becoming Svanemøllens Kaserne. After Denmark’s occupation on April 9, 1940, the government cooperated with the Germans until the alliance collapsed on August 29, 1943. That morning, German forces attacked the Engineer Barracks' training grounds, overpowering the Danish troops. From 1943 to 1945, the site was used for executions and burials of Danish resistance fighters.
