The In-Between: Men* Building a Life After Relocation

Have you moved to Denmark with your partner — and found yourself wondering not only how to find work, but how to build a life here?

Relocating as an international partner can be more complex than expected. While your partner begins a new stage in their career, you may be navigating an unfamiliar labour market, a new language, different social norms, and systems that work differently than at home. For many men, this transition also raises questions about identity, purpose, and motivation — especially when work has played a central role in how you define yourself.

This interactive workshop offers a space to step back and make sense of this 'in-between' phase. It is not a job-search seminar or a motivational talk, but a grounded, practical session where international men can meet others in similar situations and reflect together on what comes next.

Men relocating as accompanying partners often face challenges that are rarely talked about openly: career pauses or CV gaps, the need to pivot or rethink how skills are used, difficulties in building a social life, shifts in household roles or income, navigating the Danish system, and the strain of living in temporary mode - sometimes with children. These experiences are common but often faced alone.

*Men refers to all people who identify as a man or with a masculine identity. The group is inclusive and open.

Facilitator

George Karavas

George holds a PhD in International Relations and is an independent consultant specialising in international relations, Africa–China relations, and visual politics. He has worked as a lecturer in peace and conflict studies and as a researcher on projects focused on diversity and inclusion within national security communities.

Before entering academia and consulting, George worked as a professional cook and toured with a band in Australia—experiences that continue to shape his relational, grounded approach to facilitation and community-building.

Now based in Denmark since 2022 with his family, George brings lived experience as an accompanying partner, giving him a deep understanding of the emotional and practical realities of relocation, with a strong focus on wellbeing, belonging, and rebuilding purpose—while still figuring out the system, weather and mastering the coffee culture in Denmark.

At International Staff Mobility (ISM), we have a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing and on developing services that support international staff and their families throughout the relocation journey. This wellbeing-focused workshop is part of our ongoing commitment to creating supportive, inclusive spaces that strengthen integration, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
