Strengthen Your Academic Writing - Style, Language, and Voice
Course description
This two-session webinar focuses on academic language, style, and writer’s voice and is designed for researchers who wish to strengthen the clarity, precision, and persuasiveness of their academic writing.
Session 1: Academic Style and Language
The first session introduces key stylistic and linguistic aspects of academic writing, including:
- Cohesion and coherence (flow and development of ideas)
- Sentence length and structure (conciseness and clarity)
- Vocabulary choice (formality and precision)
Using excerpts from published articles, participants’ own texts, and AI-generated writing, we will examine both strong and weak examples of academic writing. Participants will analyse features of writer’s voice, including the use of personal pronouns, hedging and boosting, and the strategic choice of reporting verbs.
Session 2: Writer’s Voice in Academic Writing
The second session zooms in on the concept of writer’s voice. Effective academic writing requires critically evaluating evidence, integrating sources persuasively, and taking a clear stance on the subject matter. This stance — the writer’s voice — should be evident throughout the text and is a key component of persuasive academic writing.
The webinar is interactive and includes practical exercises, activities, and concrete tips and tools that participants can apply directly to their own writing.
