Attention to non-EU citizens in terms of Long-term Illness, Leave of Absence and Termination of Employment

If you are a non-EU citizen and hold a residence and work permit tied to the University of Copenhagen, please be aware that long-term illness or taking leave from your studies can affect your permit status.

Non-EU PhD students with a Danish residence and work permit as such, are required to participate actively in their PhD programme at all times – otherwise the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) may revoke their residence and work permits.

To safeguard your permit status, it's crucial that you inform the International Staff Mobility (ISM) office if you are affected by long-term illness, so we may discuss possible solutions. We may offer you a meeting to discuss risks and solutions for your specific situation. Please reach out to us at interstaff@adm.ku.dk so we may facilitate a meeting.

If you hold a residence and work permit under the fast-track scheme or the researcher scheme, you must be aware that the residence permit can be revoked if you are staying in Denmark during the unpaid leave. This does not apply to maternity/paternity leave.

If you have been granted unpaid leave and travel out of Denmark during the leave period, you can re-enter Denmark and continue to work on the same permit, as long as the permit is still valid and there have been no significant changes to your original employment contract.

Termination of your position when you have a residence and work permit tied to UCPH usually results in revocation of your residence and work permit. Holder of certain permits can apply for a job seeking period. For more information on how this affects you, kindly contact International Staff Mobility (ISM) at interstaff@adm.ku.dk, phone number: +45 35 32 44 60.
